Dear London medical students,
Yesterday the UH MedGroup voted unanimously to explore ways in which it can oppose the reported imposition of the DDRB recommendations on junior doctors contracts by the Government on behalf o London Medical Students. We oppose these changes as we fundamentally believe that they will have a devastating effect on our ability as future junior doctors to provide safe care to our patients. financial penalties for doctors who wish to broaden their skills by taking years out for research or sub-specialisation, or indeed for maternity leave, will further reduce the ability of junior doctors to have both a rewarding career and a family or social life. Moreover, this also discourages further education and research which is vital to maintaining a world renowned health service. Burnout is increasing year-on-year, and it puts at risk not just the mental and emotional health of junior doctors, but also the safety of patients. The proposed changes will affect almost every medical student studying in London at the moment. training to be a doctor is a substantial commitment, and we don't think the proposed changes to junior doctor contracts are fair and adequately recognise the hard work and commitment all doctors have made to join the medical profession by studying at medical school for five, six, or sometimes seven years - let alone the financial cost of doing so given the recent rise in tuition fees. The UH MedGroup believes that the current junior doctor contract offer is unsafe for patients and unfair on the doctors of the future. An emergency meeting of the UH MedGroup as been called by the MedGroup Co-Chairs to take place on Tuesday the 22nd September to discuss any potential further action. Yours sincerely, William Atkins & Nidhin Laji UH MedGroup Co-Chairs 2015/16
